Trivia Packs or Electronic Trivia: Should Your Bar Switch?

Switch from trivia packs to an electronic system when a trial shows that the new format solves a real problem for your bar and works for your players. Faster marking can be useful, but the decision also depends on joining the game, question control, equipment and what happens when something fails.

Start by separating the quiz content from the way teams submit answers. A downloaded pack can be displayed on a screen while players write on paper. Showing slides is not the same as moving answers and scoring onto phones.

Name the problem you want to solve

Write down one specific problem from your current nights: marking takes too long, teams cannot hear repeated questions, players want a faster game, or the host spends too much time preparing. Record when it happens and who has to fix it.

Then test whether changing the answer system addresses that problem. If score entry is the bottleneck, first review your marking and scorekeeping process. If the problem is unsuitable questions, changing devices alone will not establish that the next set suits your audience.

Check the actual connection requirements

Electronic trivia systems differ. Crowdpurr's official FAQ describes participants joining through a web browser with an internet connection. SpeedQuizzing's version comparison describes a local hub option that does not require internet, alongside an internet-based version. Check the exact product and mode you are considering; “electronic” does not tell you which network the game needs.

Test the host's connection and player devices at the tables you will actually use. Check joining instructions, any app installation, device requirements and what staff must do if a team cannot connect. A successful test beside the router is only one part of a room test.

Keep control of content and scoring

Before choosing a system, get clear answers to these questions:

• Can you use the questions and rounds you want, and are they included in the selected plan?

• Can you edit wording, accepted answers and point values before the event?

• Does speed affect the score, and can you choose the scoring approach your regular teams expect?

• How do you correct a disputed answer or a scoring mistake during play?

• Can you retain or export the results you need after the event?

Ask about permitted use and file compatibility before importing material from another provider. An editable file does not by itself establish permission or a supported import workflow. Do not promise your players a familiar round until you have run it in the proposed setup.

Run a small pilot before changing your regular night

Rehearse with your actual host and a few willing teams. Use material you are entitled to present, and explain that this is a test. Keep the normal event format available while you evaluate the change.

Record four things: time to get every team into the game, staff time spent helping, time to settle scores, and player feedback. Include a late-arriving team, a disconnected device and a score correction in the rehearsal. Decide how the host will pause, resume or use a paper fallback before the public event.

Keep a fallback answer sheet and answer key where the host can reach them. If you change methods during a game, tell every team how you will preserve scores and apply the same rule to everyone.

Compare the full workload, then choose

Compare content charges, software fees, player limits, equipment, printing, preparation and support time. Use the actual plans and your pilot notes. Do not assume either format is cheaper or that automatic scoring removes the need for a host.

Keep the pack format if it suits your teams and a clearer marking process solves the main problem. Pilot electronic answering if the features you have tested remove a meaningful bottleneck and your players can join reliably. Use a mixed setup only after checking that its content, scoring and backup steps work together.
